Job Title: Safety Officer
Location: Kaduna

The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and health of all employees, contractors, and visitors on the construction site and office area. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs and protocols, conducting safety training, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and standards. Knowledge and experience as HSE officer in construction environment is critical to success in this role.
Role Summary
The Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and health of all employees, contractors, and visitors on the construction site and office area. This role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs and protocols, conducting safety training, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and standards. The Safety Officer plays a critical role in preventing accidents and injuries, promoting a culture of safety, and responding to emergencies.
Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs and policies. Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards. Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify and address potential hazards.
Organize and conduct safety training sessions for employees, contractors, and visitors. Educate site personnel on safe work practices and the proper use of safety equipment. Develop training materials and resources to support ongoing safety education.
Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine causes and implement corrective actions. Prepare detailed reports on accidents and provide recommendations to prevent future occurrences. Maintain accurate records of incidents and safety-related documentation.
Develop and implement emergency response plans and procedures. Coordinate and conduct emergency drills to ensure preparedness. Act as the primary contact for emergency situations and coordinate response efforts.
Ensure the site is in compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations. Stay updated on changes in safety regulations and standards. Liaise with regulatory agencies and participate in inspections and audits.
Conduct risk assessments and job hazard analyses to identify potential safety risks. Implement control measures to mitigate identified risks. Monitor and review safety performance metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Promote a culture of safety through leadership and by setting a positive example. Encourage open communication about safety concerns and suggestions. Recognize and reward safe behavior and practices among site personnel. Submit monthly safety report
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree / HND in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in safety management within the construction industry. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar certification preferred.
In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and other safety standards relevant to construction. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs. Proficiency in using safety management software and tools. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Excellent computer skill; MS office.
Primarily works on construction sites, which may involve exposure to various weather conditions and hazardous materials. May require wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots. Occasional travel may be required for training, inspections, or meetings.
Ability to walk, stand, and navigate construction sites for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity to identify and respond to potential hazards.
