Reporting Line: Laboratory Supervisor Job Description
An Analytical Chemist / Laboratory Analyst is responsible for preparing geological, environmental, and exploration samples for elemental analysis by converting solid samples into solutions using acid digestion techniques and microwave digestion systems.
Receive and verify samples from the sample preparation section. Ensure samples are properly labeled and traceable throughout the digestion process. Weigh samples accurately according to analytical procedures. Prepare digestion reagents, acids, and standards as specified in laboratory methods. Perform acid digestion of samples using microwave digestion systems. Operate and monitor microwave digestion equipment safely and efficiently.
Include quality control samples such as blanks, duplicates, certified reference materials (CRMs)in each digestion batch. Monitor digestion efficiency and identify incomplete digestions. Record all digestion data and quality control results. Adhere to laboratory quality management systems and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
Operate digestion equipment including: Microwave digestion systems, Muffle furnace, Deionized water equipment, Analytical balances, Fume hoods etc Conduct routine equipment inspections and performance checks. Report equipment faults and maintenance requirements. Maintain equipment usage and maintenance logs.
Chemical and Reagent Management
Prepare and standardize digestion reagents and calibration solutions. Monitor acid and reagent inventory levels. Ensure proper storage and handling of hazardous chemicals. Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS/SDS) for laboratory chemicals. Assist in procurement requests for digestion consumables and reagents.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance
Follow laboratory safety procedures when handling concentrated acids and hazardous chemicals. Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Ensure proper operation of fume extraction systems. Segregate and dispose of chemical waste according to environmental regulations. Participate in laboratory safety inspections and risk assessments.
Documentation and Reporting
Maintain accurate digestion worksheets and laboratory records. Record sample weights, digestion conditions, reagent batches, and QC results. Update laboratory information management systems (LIMS) where applicable. Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly digestion activity reports.
Productivity and Continuous Improvement
Meet daily digestion throughput targets. Optimize digestion procedures to improve efficiency and turnaround time. Assist in method development and validation and calibration studies. Support laboratory accreditation requirements such as ISO/IEC 17025. Participate in training and competency development programs.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Number of samples digested per day/month. Sample turnaround time. Digestion success rate. Quality control pass rate. Equipment uptime and utilization. Safety compliance and incident-free operations. Accuracy and completeness of laboratory records.
Qualification
B.Sc. or M.Sc. Analytical Chemistry Minimum of 4 years Experience.
